love

The term paper is an analytical argumentative paper in which you discuss a topic or
theme from one of the texts on our syllabus. This paper must be at least six full pages long. Make
sure you cite extensively from the primary text and that you explain your quotes, that you give a
reading of them. Incorporate quotations from two journal articles, to support your argument.
Dont use electronic sources, with the exception of articles accessed through the librarys
databases JSTOR and LION. No websites, no matter how pretty they look or how handy they
were. I need you to use reliable material, and with many websites its just really hard to judge
that. Using the librarys databases is not as hard as you may think, and well talk about how to do
that.
In this term paper you will delve into a theme in one of our textslook at how a single
issue (love, gender, loyalty, food, hair, race, etc.) is treated and valued. Make sure you cite
extensively from your primary text and that you introduce and explain any quotes from primary
and secondary sources. Please submit a draft of the term paper by the date indicated on the
reading schedule. If you dont, theres a grade deduction of ten pointsthat may sound harsh but
this is the kind of assignment that you just have to start early, and its worth 20% of the final
grade. I will post a set of guidelines on Blackboard; for now let me just say Im looking for
MLA-style formatting, 1″ margins, 12-pt font.

Questions & Answers

Each of the 4 questions (or group of questions) addresses a theme in the readings for this lecture.  Please write a paragraph or two on each of the themes.  You dont have to address every little question I raise or point I bring up.  I want to see your thoughts, opinions, and responses to the readings as they pertain to these 4 themes and issues.  Please refer to the specific authors or articles.

1.    How does social cohesion and social behavior affect the spread, control, and prevention of infection? Ed young describes this patchwork is psychologically perilous.  Why is this so?  How do our notions of ingroups and outgroups affect our behavior in a pandemic? What about norms and social learning and behavior as they relate to our sense of responsibility to the community / collective?  How does human travel and the structure of cities factor into the spread of infection and social cohesion? What about the complex systems that Debora Mackenzie describes?

2.    What is the role of Government (Federal, State, and Local) during an outbreak, epidemic or pandemic, as it pertains to protecting the individuals, protecting the nation as a whole, and preserving individual rights?  Consider Michael Shears article in the New York Times and Ed Youngs analysis of how a virus defeated America.  How did the U.S. Government prepare and react to the growing pandemic?  Some themes to consider (You only need to write a paragraph on one of these!):
    Preparedness / Surveillance
Financial investment in health systems/research/preparedness (What is the enough / too much to spend?)
Risk assessment (How well do individuals assess risk? Should government scientist assess risk for people?)
o    Orders/Mandates vs recommendations/nudge
o    Warnings when should government sound the warning (and at what cost, financial/economic vs safety)
o    Cassandra Curse  when one individuals identify a potential hazard, how can they  make themselves heard and how can we listen better

3.    How do American cultural beliefs of Individualism and Collectivism (and the polarization of the two) affect the publics preparedness and response to the pandemic? What is Ed Youngs take on this issue and how it related to the pandemic?  What do you think of his assessment and reasoning?  What to you think about Ed Youngs assessment of Donald Trump?  How is this a reflection of us (America)?  What role does capitalism play?  Is American capitalism culturally different from that in other countries, and, if so, how?

4.    How have fundamental inequities and social determinants of health worsened this pandemic?  What is our responsibility (as citizens and as Public Health officials) to make a more equitable society?  For example, consider inequities and health disparities related to race and ethnicity, gender, age, wealth/poverty, zip code, type of work/employment. What affect do these inequities and disparities have on the health and well-being of the population as a whole? Think back to Dr. Beverlys lecture and the video we watched for that class. Relate that material to what you learned from the Covid readings.

mired opening

Please watch the attached scene carefully. I suggest you watch it at least twice. Pick one shot from the scene. Tell me which shot number it is in the scene. Then describe in as much detail as possible the mise-en-scene and cinematography for that shot (in point form is fine). Finally, tell me why this is an important moment in the film. Don’t forget to tell me who this is.

Abnormal Psych

Andrew is a 5 year old boy who was referred to the school psychologist by his teacher. According to Andrews teacher, Andrew is significantly behind the other kindergarten students in his verbal abilities. His teacher reports that when she tries to engage him in discussion, he makes no attempt to listen to her or to respond to her questions. She had looked into his hearing test results, but there was no indication of any auditory problems.
Andrews teacher reported that he has no friends in the class, despite the fact that other children have attempted to connect with him. When Andrew first comes in the classroom each morning, he remains at his cubby playing with the zipper on his jacket long after the other students have roamed to the other part to the classroom for play activities.
Andrew does seem interested during the time of day when the students take out musical instruments and are permitted to play them as they wish. Andrew always chooses cymbals, and bangs them together as loudly as possible and repeatedly during the duration of music.
During recess, Andrew does not play with the other students on the playground, but either lays by himself in the grass or hangs upside down from a tree branch.
Andrews parents do not seem concerned by his behavior, believing that he will grow out of it. His mother is pregnant and is expecting a child in three months.
Andrew has had ear infections as a child, and his parents report no other medical problems.

1. Based on your understanding of abnormal psychology, propose a  DSM diagnosis for Andrew.
2. Provide three pieces of clinical information to support your diagnosis.
3. What is the concern regarding Andrews mothers pregnancy? Why?

Personality Disorders

Pedro is a  20 year old male who was referred for counseling by his concerned mother. Pedro’s mother accompanied him to his first sesion to explain some of her concerns. According to his mother, Pedro is very withdrawn and rarely spends time with other people. She had hoped that beginning college would have been a fresh start for Pedro and that he would have developed a group of friends at his new school. Pedro’s mother became increasingly concerned about him when he recently stated that he wants to drop out of school and return home. When Pedro was given the opportunity in the therapy session to explain his perspective, he took a deep shaky breath before speaking. Pedro stated that he has been thinking about dropping out of school because he cannot bear being around other people. He said that he can remember feeling this way as a preadolescent but recognized that the situation had considerably worsened during his teenage years. Pedro explained that when around others he becomes preoccupied with fears that they are thinking negative thoughts about him. He notices constantly worrying that others are thinking he is a “loser” or that he is boring, and finds it terribly uncomfortable to be in social situations because of this. He rarely initiates conversations with others, believing that they will think that he is boring or unintelligent. Pedro stated that days may pass at college without him speaking to anyone at all. Recently, Pedro dropped one of his classes because the class required a group project and an oral presentation, which Pedro felt unable to do due to the social interaction involved. As a result of ongoing anxiety since beginning college, Pedro has developed an ulcer.

Abnormal Psych

Jacob is a 16 year old high school student who was referred to the school counselor due to repeated behavioral problems at school. Jacob has a reputation among the employees at his high school for being “trouble”.  Jacob frequently gets into conflicts with his teachers, often resulting in school suspensions. He has been kicked off the school football team due to recurrent arguments with his coach, which had escalated into a physical conflict.

Jacob’s mother had attended one of the therapy sessions, at the request of the school counselor. During that session, Jacob was antagonistic towards both the counselor and his mother. The counselor noted that Jacob repeatedly resisted his mother’s efforts to make suggestions to him. When the school counselor suggested that Jacob have a psychological evaluation, his mother sighed, and explained that they had tried that before, and when Jacob became antagonistic with the psychiatrist, he was asked to leave. His mother resignedly said “these situations seem to happen all of the time with Jacob”.

Texas Government

Do you think political parties serve an important function in Texas?  Why?  What are some of the barriers to third parties in Texas?  Do you think Texas should make it easier for minor parties to gain political power?  Why or why not?  What changes would you make in order to improve the visibility and power of minor parties in Texas?
